Robert P. Sykes started his military career at the age of 19 as a field technician for the UEI hoping to earn enough money to marry Cadia. His first two years were spent in basic training with the next four years relatively peaceful. Within this time of peace Sykes was able to marry Cadia. However the peace subsided due to increasing attacks on Martian UEI resource facilities. These organized saboteurs were waging all-out war on the UEI mining branches determined to halt the monopoly of Martian minerals being processed. As a result the UEI forces were called upon to put an end to the rebels and their assault on government workers. Sykes saw a lot of combat during the conflict. Toward the end of the conflict, Sykes received word that his wife was pregnant with his child. Sykes was ecstatic over the news and was eager for the war to be over so that he could spend time with his would-be daughter.
However, as victory was drawing near for the UEI forces, the separatists grew more and more desperate. Vehicles packed with explosives and IEDs were used as a last resort to try and scare UEI forces away. Sykes and his company were defending one of the outposts near the border of corporate territory when an ore hauler packed with explosives erupted after plowing into the building. There were heavy casualties in Sykes’ company. He sustained massive burns to the right side of his body. These burns resulted in the amputation of his right arm, leg. Sykes returned home a decorated hero but was ashamed of inhuman metallic limbs that replaced his organic ones. His wife maintained an upbeat disposition concerning his prosthetics telling him he was the same man she fell in love with all those years ago. He never stayed at home long for in the back of his mind he hated his daughter seeing him as some sort of monster.
After a few years with his family he eventually returned to service until the UEI contracts were redrafted after the war. Sykes received his military pension and purchased a homestead for him and his wife in the terraformed Agricultural District on Mars. Sykes is currently retired passing the time by doing freelance mechanical maintenance for the local community. His daughter is a scientist on Mars.
